Should NZ ban super-skinny models from the catwalk?

July 1, 2010

After Aussie’s announcement that super-skinny models will be banned from the catwalk as part of a new code of conduct, naturally the pressure is on for New Zealand to follow in its footsteps.

New Zealand’s Minister of Youth Affairs Paula Bennett has said she will look into the issue of stick-thin models having a negative effect on young people.

Personally, I like Paula Bennett. She has a no-bullshit approach and she’s realistic. She gets things done and doesn’t worry about trampling over people to get things done. So I hope she takes this issue and follows Aussie.

Skinny models are sickening. Who really wants to see those gaunt faces and ribs showing through skin? I have made posts about it before. There’s been a lot of controversy around the world about this issue, and has been especially highlighted at fashion weeks. I fully support curvy models. We need to get real women with hips and bums and boobs on those catwalks.

Shh… Secret Squirrel

May 13, 2010

There’s no denying it, Secret Squirrel’s new collection is enough to make any fashionable girl excited for those cold winter months ahead. The Australian clothing line now has boutique stores all over Australia and New Zealand, and continues to get better with each new collection.

This year’s winter collection “The White Album” features the ever-popular high-waisted skirts, sequins, stripe, tights and more scrumptious fabrics and designs.

I’m especially a fan of this delightful mix of pure and glam. Who would have thought a sequined jacket would go so well with a demure white dress?

Curves take on NZ Fashion Week

July 1, 2009

It’s not only Vogue that is demanding curves on the catwalk. New Zealand has caught up with the “cool to be curvy” trend and will be showcasing this new angle on fashion at this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week.

The fashion elite may disagree with this new trend, preferring their stick-thin, curve-less models. But we cannot ignore trends, and what’s hot right now is CURVES!

New Zealand Fashion week is up-sizing with it’s new curvaceous label The Carpenter’s Daughter, confirmed to show on the official schedule in September.

“Fashion Week only caters for 35 per cent of women and we cater for the other 65 per cent,” The Carpenter’s Daughter creator Caroline Marr says.

True to this, the stats show that 65 per cent of New Zealand Women are believed to be a size 16 or bigger, with an average dress size of 14 to 16.

Wellington award-winning actress and Dancing With the Stars finalist Geraldine Brophy has worn the label for 10 years, and applauds Fashion Week’s move. She posed for The Carpenter’s Daughter’s spring/summer 09/10 campaign, and is also now their ambassador.

This move is heartening and potentially the start of some big changes in the fashion industry. So far, the general public seems to be benefitting from the recession fashion-wise.
